What can people learn from animals? We learn to be adaptive around animals, because even within species, there is an amazing diversity in behavior and anatomy. Never judge a book by its cover! I have met plenty of cats who act like dogs and dogs who act like cats. It’s interesting to learn about other species because you always seem to find a connection between them. Animals are just like us, but with different hobbies.

Rachelle Steabler

Receptionist/Veterinary Technician

Background: BSC Biology; AAS Biotechnology; British Horse Society Intermediate Stable Manager; Advanced National Certificate in Equine Business Management; ten years of experience in small and large animal practices and marine mammal/turtle rehabilitation; twenty-three years of experience in equestrian field in the UK, Europe, Canada, and USA.

Role at HWVH: I work as part of a team to respond to day-to-day activities in the practice, which vary depending on the minute! Mainly I write a lot of post-it notes and use a lot of paper towels.

Why do you like working with animals? I have been fortunate to work with domestic and wild animals and to travel abroad for work/volunteer/research positions. I’m constantly learning new skills because veterinary medicine is a career where continuous education is required. Being able to follow a client from initial illness to health — and in some cases from birth to end of life — gives a sense of accomplishment and connects that family to our extended family.
